Deconstruction of the old George Lucas Instructional Building at USC.
I may or may not have stood there watching this for a good 15 minutes…
Well, so much for my college haunts.
The irony is that I was given shit by the more anti-intellectual factions of USC in that very building for deconstructing things too much.
However, I had some incredible, enlightening, formative moments taking classes in that building and I also had some interminable, 3-hour blocks of teeth-grinding horror where I kept thinking that I was being fucked with but with no punchline in sight. The thing that strikes me most about it, though, is the fact that it was a totally great, funtional building that they basically got rid of for the sake of building something fancier. Go USC opulence!
The more appalling side note, however, is that they tore down the Arnold Shoernberg building, which was right next to it. Lucas was basically a concrete monolith, so I guess it’s nice that they replaced it with something livelier. However, ASI was legitimately a cool, unique piece of architecture… miss u.
And now we have the George Lucas Cheesecake Factory!
